What to Look for When Buying a Second-hand Motorhome 26 Dec One of the first things you will probably notice when looking to buy a used motorhome is how well they hold their price. They are actually somewhat of an anomaly in the vehicle world. Motorhome values depreciate significantly in the first year or two, in common with all new vehicles, but after that value and prices can stay stable for many years and on rare occasions even appreciate. This means that buying a second-hand motorhome is likely to mean a substantial investment, even on older models. So how can you avoid ending up with a lemon? Vehicle and mechanical checks In the main this will be no different to the checks and safeguards you would ensure when buying any second hand vehicle. The big difference is that typically motorhomes will stand unused for longer periods and this in itself can cause extra problems with component corrosion and moving part seizure. As a general rule, because they are used mainly for recreation purposes, motorhomes will have far lower mileage than transport vehicles of a comparative age. If you have no mechanical knowledge you will need to employ the services of some-one who does. Engines will need a thorough check as well as looking over the chassis and vehicle base.

Translate This Page Updated: R" The above is probably the best feedback we have had. How many people drive 6 hours each way to get a Motorhome repaired and are elated by the experience? We are seeing more and more Motorhome Fuseboards that have burnt out. Some have been so badly burnt it has been hard to see the reason for the Fire, but it seems to be consistent with poor batteries, an overlarge battery bank or both.

There are two electrical systems in most modern caravans This supplies power through a hook up lead to the refrigerator, three pin mains sockets, v lighting if fitted , a transformer if fitted , immersion heater if fitted , and v space heater if fitted. Why Are There Two Systems? The v mains system runs all house hold appliances such as T. It also runs high wattage appliances such as fridges and kettles. The 12v system runs all low wattage items such as water pumps, strip lights etc. A battery is used for the 12v system.

If a power cut occurred you will still have lights and water. This is why it is important to check the operation of the battery. How Is My Battery Charged? The answer is YES. Some of the electrics in the caravan are volt sensitive and could be damaged.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 Posts Advice please on mains hook up in France. We are going to France this year for the first time and are novice M"homers. I have read various articles about making sure we have the correct mains hook-up connectors for the French campsites but there seems to be some conflicting advice around. In addition to the normal blue UK style connector I have obtained what was described in the shop as a"continental" adapter but I am not sure if this is the correct one for France as I read somewhere that the French sockets are different from elsewhere in Europe.

The one I have bought has 2 pins plus a hole where you might expect a 3rd pin to be.

Mar 01,  · My Hymer charged both from the mains with no input from me. I do not know about the new Chausson, I just assumed they all charged both.

Read on if you want to learn how to use our electric hook-up facility safely and efficiently. There are two main ways you can power electrical devices on the campsite. The first is to use a leisure battery, which is like a car battery and provides a 12V supply, and the second is an electric hook-up. Most commercial campsites in the UK will offer electric hook-ups on some or all of their pitches, we have 46 here at the Red Shoot Camping Park.

The power on our site is designed on the basis of diversity so the main site power supply is geared up to an average electrical usage assuming not all hook-ups take 10A at any one time. Occasionally, if a cold spell occurs at times of high occupancy and all users switch on electrical heaters, kettles etc. Tripping the electrical supply can make you unpopular on site. Even a 12V battery can give you a nasty shock if used incorrectly. Used in the right way however, you can benefit from mains electricity and, if you take the right precautions, you can do it safely.

Follow these tips below and take professional advice from your equipment supplier to ensure your camping trip is safe and comfortable! However, we have overall responsibility for the safety of our guests while on site so if we feel that any electrical equipment does not conform to safety standards or is connected to the supply in an unsafe manner, we will disconnect the camping unit. You must use a purpose-built lead designed for bringing electricity to your unit.

These leads will have special weather-proof plugs made to connect to the sites hook-up. We recommend you use a cable length of 25m as the layout of some of our pitches means that you can sometimes be pitched a little distance from the hook-up bollard.

It is unusual for it to happen in the UK, it is more likely to happen when touring on the continent. So what is it and how does it affect you? Simply, it is the live and neutral wires are the wrong way round on the EHU bollard. To understand how the situation comes about we need to go back in history a bit. Quite simple really and quite safe. So we and the rest of Europe carried on switching both wires.

The power from the mains enters the first LC circuit and resonates between the capacitor and also the primary coil (which is commonly 10 to twenty turns of thick wire). Mains hook-up lead If you"ve just bought a new caravan then it should come equipped with a mains hook-up lead Leisure battery If your caravan hasn"t already got a leisure battery and you don"t always hook up to mains electricity then you"re going to need a 12v leisure battery. LPG cyclinders The LPG Gas in you caravan is used on your hob, oven, heater, water and the fridge if it"s not connected to the electricity.

So unless you"re going to just use microwave or be constanly on mains electricity you"ll need to get at least one LPG canister and regulator. Water containers A perennial favourite for your water solutions are the Aquaroll and Wastemaster products which are both portable containers for your fresh water and waste toilet water.

The Aquamaster is great, and the tank acts like a big wheel making lugging litres a breeze. The Wastemaster has built in wheels making it easy to transport.

Campervan Electrics You"ve just bought a van and want to convert it into a camper van. One of the main things you will want to do is think in advance about power and how to install electrics into your campervan. If you have any plans whatsoever to sit in your campervan for an evening with the lights on, music playing, heater fan spinning away, then you should fit a second battery. This article has now been expanded into three comprehensive chapters on campervan electrics in the new Renwick"s Guides book Self Build Campervan Conversions.

Technical Matters Our van came with several very useful extras fitted: Roof mounted solar panel; this charges the two leisure batteries. Roof rack bars and ladder for additional carrying capacity. Reversing camera and sensors. In addition we have made the alterations below, please click on the thumbnails to display a larger image: Air assist controls Air assist bellow and brackets Air Assist Suspension — having increased our Revenue Weight see below , this had also significantly increased our payload and because we travel long haul and freedom camp, often we use pretty much all of it.

As a result of this our van drives quite low at the back, and because of uneven weight distribution due to water tanks and batteries, also a little lower on the offside. But the final decision to add air assist suspension was made when we scraped going on and off ferries. After much research, we chose AS Air Suspension for the job, and they provided an excellent service throughout.

This is a market leading company near Chester who have specialised in bespoke systems since when they started importing the components from Holland. Fitting took about 6 hours, we were talked through the whole job before they started and asked about the placement of components like the pump and controls, and best of all, we cold leave the van fully loaded while the work was done.

This Data Sheet looks at how to use this electricity supply safely and discusses its limitations. Because your unit is mobile there is a greater likelihood of things going wrong with an electrical installation than with the fixed installation within your house. This guide has been written in response to some of the questions that have been asked on various forums. It describes the electrical systems on a typical caravan and how they work. However, as caravans have evolved to the demands of the modern caravanner, these systems have become more complex, but a basic understanding of a simple system will help you diagnose faults even on complex systems in a modern caravan and help to maintain your caravan over the coming years.

Apologies to those reading that have some knowledge and find the early part a little simplistic. I have described a generic car and caravan wiring system, it will not be identical to your car or caravan.

Looking at each example individually; Fan Heater The fan heater is one of the oldest and most established forms of heating compared to the other three main options and has been around for years. It remains a very popular method of heating, as it is compact and powerful, and is, possibly, the fastest available method of heating any given space. Because fan heaters are, generally, very compact, and take up little space when packed.

Another benefit, unique to this form of heating, is that they can also be used to blow cold air, meaning that they can be a welcome addition to the appliance list across the whole camping season. The downside with this form of heating is that the noise of the fan can be a little intrusive in an enclosed space, and the heating element, although well protected, can be vulnerable, if anything combustible is drawn into the heater accidentally.

Also, if left on for prolonged periods, they have been known to overheat, which will often cause them to burn out, and cease to work. This means that they are best suited to heating larger spaces, such as awnings, where the fan is able to distribute the heat more quickly than other forms of heating. The thermostat then causes the heater to cut out, it cools quickly, kicks back in, another blast of hot air, and repeat the process.

In confined spaces, it can lead to a slightly more inconsistent temperature than other heating methods. Some users have also complained of dry throats, etc, when using them constantly over night. The simplest way to describe this form of heater is that it is, effectively, a fan heater, without the fan. The vents in this heater point upwards, rather than horizontally, as in a fan heater. This is because the hot air from the heating elements rises out of the vents, at the top, drawing in cold air, from the bottom, to be heated inside, and so the process repeats.
