Now, however, a group of bike enthusiasts in the city are reviving that spirit and history in the form of Mutt Motorcycles. Benny Thomas and his team have been building high-end vintage customs for some time and had been toying with the idea of providing small-cc accessible, affordable and cool bikes.

Now, they do exactly that. It may be old, but it is tried and tested, fuel-injected — and completely reliable. It sits in a twin-shock tubular steel frame. It has a brushed aluminium-style tank which is actually hand-finished, hand-rubbed raw steel, clear coated and topped off with a black stripe and the Mutt logo. The all-black frame is accompanied by black spoked wheels, black aluminium mudguards, and a black aluminium LED tail light and LED indicators.

As well as British observers there were also representatives of the French Army present. The tests were successful but a number of modifications were suggested and in the Velocette MAC was modified into a military specification. Velocette"s first order for the military version was from the French Government but the contract for 1, motorcycles was cancelled [3] and only a few were delivered before the French were overrun by the advancing German Army. A strong carrying rack replaced the rear pillion seat [5] and the headlamp was masked to comply with blackout regulations.

An order for 2, was placed in June but problems with Velocette"s supplies and the limited production facilities meant that it was a difficult order to fulfil. By September they had only delivered motorcycles and the order was cancelled. In these were upgraded to Veloce"tele forks" which were developed for the Velocette LE. These had coil springs with damping.

Collectors seem to own most of them these days. Post war development resulted in Velocette winning both the and cc World Championships utilising overhead cam singles, however, the focus of the company"s road machinery production had now shifted to the over head valve models developed from the pre war MOV and which would culminate in the introduction of the Thruxton cc during the"s.

For many enthusiast"s though, a Velocette"s valves should be operated by a camshaft mounted at the top of the engine and not buried somewhere within the crankcases, resulting in number of specials utilising cammy engines housed in the excellent post war pivoted fork frame being built. Indeed the overhead camshaft seemed to hold a particular allure for the gentlemen at Hall Green, rumours had circulated during the sixties of a new cc overhead cam engine being developed which unfortunately came to nothing, however, it does seem that at least one overhead cam machine was built at Hall Green during the sixties although it was in no way related to the stillborn cc.
